# Deviations from RHEL 10

  • Starting with AlmaLinux OS 10.0 version a new architecture was added - x86-64-v2.
    • RHEL is increasing the architecture version baseline to v3 dropping support for numerous older CPUs (and some newer ones). In AlmaLinux OS 10, we will follow Red Hat’s decision to ship x86-64-v3 optimized binaries by default, but we will also provide additional x86-64-v2 architecture ONLY for older hardware. All 3rd party packages for RHEL10 will target x86-64-v3, while the x86-64-v2 release of AlmaLinux OS 10 will only be suitable for workloads where using the default OS package set is enough, or where users will be able to rebuild any additional packages they require for x86-64-v2 architecture themselves.
    • ALESCo is currently considering the option of rebuilding EPEL for x86-64-v2 users. If you use this version, please let us know (opens new window), so we can make informed decisions about this version in the future.
  • Re-enabled frame pointers by default. This enables system-wide real-time tracing and profiling to optimize the performance of any workload running on AlmaLinux OS.
  • Re-enabled SPICE support for both server and client applications.
  • Enabled KVM for IBM POWER in the virtualization stack, so it’s possible to continue using KVM just like it is in AlmaLinux 8.
  • Firefox and Thunderbird in the system repositories are also shipped as regular RPM packages.
  • The following device drivers were modified to re-add PCI IDs for hardware that was previously disabled in our upstream:
    • aacraid - Dell PERC2, 2/Si, 3/Si, 3/Di, Adaptec Advanced Raid Products, HP NetRAID-4M, IBM ServeRAID & ICP SCSI
    • be2iscsi - Emulex OneConnectOpen-iSCSI for BladeEngine 2 and 3 adapters
    • be2net - Emulex BladeEngine 2 and 3 adapters *
    • hpsa - HP Smart Array Controller
    • lpfc - Emulex LightPulse Fibre Channel SCSI
    • megaraid_sas - Broadcom MegaRAID SAS
    • mlx4_core - Mellanox Gen2 and ConnectX-2 adapters
    • mpt3sas - LSI MPT Fusion SAS 3.0
    • mptsas - Fusion MPT SAS Host
    • qla2xxx - QLogic Fibre Channel HBA
    • qla4xxx - QLogic iSCSI HBA For a complete list of hardware support for which was added in this release, see the Extended hardware support section.

# Installation instructions

There are three installation ISO images available:

AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso - a single network installation CD image that downloads packages over the Internet.

AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-minimal.iso - a minimal self-containing DVD image that makes possible offline installation.

AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-dvd.iso - a full installation DVD image that contains mostly all AlmaLinux packages.

Download a suitable ISO image from the 10.0-beta/isos/$arch/ directory, for example:

$ wget https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/10.0-beta/isos/x86_64/AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso

Download and import the AlmaLinux public key:

$ wget https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/RPM-GPG-KEY-AlmaLinux-10
$ gpg --import RPM-GPG-KEY-AlmaLinux-10

Download and verify a checksums list:

$ wget https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/10.0-beta/isos/x86_64/CHECKSUM

# we are looking for “Good signature”
$ gpg --verify CHECKSUM
gpg: Signature made Tue 03 Dec 2024 08:58:28 AM EST using RSA key ID C2A1E572

gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!

Verify the downloaded ISO image checksum:

# calculate the downloaded ISO SHA256 checksum
$ sha256sum AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso
f0bf7fb6a81a506a4adc56f2537ae53ee9ad4b7ace1b74cf344a100772e10874  AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso

# compare it with expected checksum, it should be the same
$ cat CHECKSUM | grep -E 'SHA256.*AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso'
SHA256 (AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso) = f0bf7fb6a81a506a4adc56f2537ae53ee9ad4b7ace1b74cf344a100772e10874

If you decide to use the AlmaLinux-10.0-beta-1-x86_64-boot.iso image, you will need to provide the 10.0-beta/BaseOS/x86_64/kickstart/ repository from the selected mirror as the Installation Source if the installer will not be able to find closest mirror for some reason.

There are no extra Installation Sources required if you decide to go with either the minimal or DVD ISO images.
